Zverev Faces Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Showdown
Preamble
The typical complications of tournament pool play mean by this stage of the season-ending championships we’re often left scratching our heads, searching around for a computing device and striving to determine the complex permutations of qualification. But this evening's contest between Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, thankfully, is simple. It's a direct elimination: the successful player secures a semi-final contest against Carlos Alcaraz at this year-end tournament; the defeated player is eliminated.
Zverev is the predicted winner for this: the world No 3 is the more accomplished player, has claimed the title at this competition on two prior occasions and holds the advantage in their personal record with six victories against three defeats, securing victories in both their previous matches on an enclosed hard court.
However … this particular court on which Felix has secured the majority of his titles, he is full of confidence after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on Wednesday and he defeated the German in the US Championships third round in August. Plus, the court pace is quicker in Turin than at the US Open venue, which is even more beneficial in AA’s benefit.
If Zverev holds back, as he did against the Italian, and Auger-Aliassime takes it to the German with his powerful serves and confident shots, it might very well be the North American athlete – the one-time phenom who was once in line ahead of the younger champions to replace the tennis icons – who earns the uncertain distinction of facing the world No 1 tomorrow.
Action commences: at about 8.30pm local time, 7.30pm GMT.
