Seychelles' main opposition leader Patrick Herminie has won presidential elections, defeating incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan in a runoff vote, according to official results released by the electoral commission.

Herminie secured 52.7 percent of the ballots cast, while Ramkalawan received 47.3 percent of the votes.

In his victory speech, Herminie promised to lower the cost of living, restore public sector operations, and unite the island nation, declaring the outcome signifies "a fresh start for every Seychellois citizen".

Following his unsuccessful attempt at re-election, Ramkalawan extended congratulations to Herminie for his win, noting he departs with "a record that would impress numerous leaders".

The election went to a run-off after neither candidate won an outright majority in the first round two weeks ago.

Previously serving as parliamentary speaker, Herminie faced witchcraft allegations in 2023 in what he said was a politically motivated attempt to thwart his presidential ambitions.

The charges were dropped in 2024, paving the way for him to run for office.

“I intend to serve as president for every Seychellois, and I will end divisions by ceasing preferences and giving everyone the opportunity to thrive,” Herminie said in his victory speech.

Ramkalawan is the latest incumbent to lose elections in Africa, following Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera's ousting last month as public frustration over escalating living costs mounted.

United Seychelles (US), Herminie's political party, captured parliamentary elections with a strong majority last month, reclaiming authority after it was earlier lost to Ramkalawan's Linyon Demokratik Seselwa (LDS).
