India's capital Awakens to Dangerous Haze Post Celebrations
On Tuesday morning inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that fell into the "critical" level.
Extremely High Pollution Measurements
Multiple areas of Delhi showed an AQI over 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe limit established by the global health authority.
Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles soared to of 1,800, representing 15-20x exceeding safe limits.
Pyrotechnics Ban and Current Changes
Beginning in 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their significant contribution to the deadly smog that blankets the capital as winter begins.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed city government appealed to the supreme court to request a modification of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmentalists as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Legal Ruling and Enforcement
To the disappointment of public health and environmental activists, the court agreed to the proposal, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be used during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was widespread disregard of the time restrictions across the city, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.
Several recording stations throughout the city showed contamination spiking around the night hours to the most severe levels seen during Diwali in at least the past three years.
Cross-Border Implications
Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a blame game with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partially attributing declining atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from across the border following the events.
Persistent Environmental Issue
Alarmingly severe concentrations of pollution in the capital have remained as a major problem for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.
Near celebratory seasons, the concentration of dangerous particulate matter in the environment has been observed to spike to 70% higher the peak levels ever documented in China's capital, which was once considered as the world's most polluted urban center.
Multiple Contamination Contributors
The problem in the city is resulting from a convergence of various sources including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, rural residents regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, producing hazardous pollution that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air descends.
Public Health and Financial Toll
Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants calling home the capital region is significant, according to multiple studies.
This pollution leads to high levels of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be accounting for 10,000 premature deaths annually in Delhi.
