Hamilton Island, a Iconic Queensland Holiday Destination on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.
A major resort island situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a US-based investment group in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“It is an honor to continue the vision and dedication of the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – announced it had signed an deal to purchase the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending standard regulatory approvals.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the new owners of an island that holds a “unique position in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, Hamilton spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly 30% of the land is built upon, including a significant range of facilities:
- Five separate hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- Twenty shops and retail spaces
- An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A boat marina and a commercial airport
Hamilton Island is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at The Island's History
The late Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and winemaker, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. For decades prior that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from the outback and from the south.
The Buyer's Other Holdings and Local Heritage
The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. The name derives from Captain James Cook, who navigated the HMS Endeavour through the island group on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
