A senior Russian military figure has been killed following an explosion in Moscow, according to official statements.

The attack took place on Monday morning when an explosive device placed beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Investigators mentioned that one theory under investigation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. So far, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Site of the Incident

Teams have been dispatched to the location, which is understood to be in a southern district of the city.

Media coverage state the explosion happened in a vehicle lot near a residential building.

Series of Targeted Attacks

Since the start of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This new event follows other serious incidents, including:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a device hidden on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a source from Ukraine in the past connected Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such claims are not officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

The war has witnessed covert operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death continues to be ongoing.
